Harbour tour – What to see and how to get there
Sightseeing in La Rochelle
The dock is the centre of the town and the focal point for life in La Rochelle. The town wall, with its three towers, is a landmark of the town and stretches behind the radiant blue of the Atlantic. The fortified towers of Saint-Nicholas and de la Chaine remind us of the town’s strength and prosperity, while the historical lighthouse is a symbol of the many years of shipping in La Rochelle. From here, streets lined with archways and market stalls lead into the old town. Medieval half-timbered houses, detailed Renaissance buildings and picturesque patrician houses of wealthy merchants reflect the harbour town’s prosperity throughout the centuries.
You can find out more about the lucrative trade between La Rochelle and America in the Musée de Nouveau Monde. Apart from the many historic sites, La Rochelle also pulls in the visitors with its modern aquarium. This popular tourist destination houses a colourful range of marine life in over sixty tanks and is considered one of the most beautiful aquariums in Europe. In La Rochelle, you just can’t get away from the ocean.
Getting to La Rochelle
La Rochelle has an airport nearby. You can get from the Aéroport de la Rochelle into town in no time at all. You can also start your language study abroad by staying in another town in France. Bordeaux, Nantes and Paris, for example, are only two to three hours away by train. The railway station is located right in the heart of the city centre and has good bus and train links. Of course, as a harbour town, La Rochelle also welcomes any visitors who come by sea, on passenger boats that moor alongside the industrial boats in the large port of La Pallice.

A typical day at Eurocentres La Rochelle
Rooms flooded with sunlight, the smell of sun cream, the sound of cafeteria chatter... Impressions from La Rochelle. Mirjam from Germany is here to perfect her French. She chose La Rochelle because she loves the ocean and likes a wide variety of recreational activities. It was the best decision! The sympathetic ambience and the well-structured language tuition are just what she was hoping for. Her friend from the USA also comes on to the sun terrace, where they discuss together – in French – what they want to do after school. Students come here from all corners of the world, which ensures an interesting multicultural mix.
Many students hire a bike in order to travel from their accommodation to the school or to tour the beautiful coastal area. You can learn to sail on the Atlantic or just go swimming, but there is also lots to do away from the water. There is even a piano at the school for the students to play – which Mirjam is particularly pleased about. She sometimes organises a concert with her fellow students. The teachers take time for each of the individual students – with a maximum of 14 students per class, this is easily possible. Thanks to this, Mirjam has been able to considerably improve her language skills. With the regular coaching, she is making fast, targeted progress. La Rochelle – she will miss it!
